Planet Gold Kenya: A Shining Example of How to Reduce Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is a major source of mercury pollution around the world, but a new project in Kenya is showing how to reduce mercury use in a way that benefits everyone involved.

The Planet Gold Kenya project is a five-year initiative that aims to reduce mercury use in the ASGM sector by 1.5 tonnes. The project is working with six mining communities in Narok, Migori, Kakamega, and Vihiga counties to provide training, technical assistance, and financial support for the adoption of mercury-free processing technologies such as:

  • Improved crushing and milling: This helps to liberate gold particles from rock and make them easier to capture.
  • Gravity concentration tools such as sluicing and shaking tables: These tools use the difference in density between gold and other minerals to separate them.
  • Flotation: This process uses air bubbles to attach to gold particles and carry them to the surface of a liquid, where they can be collected.
  • Chemical leaching: This process uses chemicals to dissolve gold from the ore, so that it can be collected and refined.

The project is also working to strengthen the policy and regulatory framework for ASGM in Kenya and to raise awareness of the dangers of mercury use.

The Planet Gold Kenya project is a shining example of how to reduce mercury use in the ASGM sector in a way that is both environmentally and socially responsible. The project is providing miners with the tools and resources they need to switch to mercury-free practices, while also working to create a more supportive environment for the ASGM sector as a whole.
