Kenya Takes Center Stage in Global Fight Against Terrorism: Teams Up with EU at GCTF Meeting

Kenya emerged as a key player in the global fight against terrorism, hosting the 23rd Global Counterterrorism Forum Coordinating Committee Meeting on 29th February 2024. This high-profile event saw Kenya join forces with the European Union (EU) to strengthen collaboration and tackle the evolving threat of terrorism.

The partnership focuses on several crucial areas:

• Supporting African-led solutions: The EU and Egypt, co-chairs of the GCTF, emphasized their commitment to empowering African nations to combat terrorism and violent extremism. Kenya's leadership of the East Africa Capacity-Building Working Group exemplifies this focus.

• Proactive Measures: Kenya highlighted the importance of taking pre-emptive action to counter terrorism. This proactive approach aims to prevent threats before they escalate.

• Rehabilitation and Reintegration: A key discussion point was how to effectively manage the prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration of former terrorists. Experts shared valuable insights on creating tailored programs for successful reintegration.

• Inclusivity and Human Rights: The GCTF meeting prioritized inclusivity, engaging civil society and promoting gender-sensitive approaches. Additionally, the EU's "Oversight and Accountability Initiative" aims to ensure the lawful use of counterterrorism measures while upholding human rights.

• Addressing Root Causes: The newly launched initiative on "The Nexus between Climate Change and Violent Extremism" tackles the environmental factors that can contribute to radicalization.

This collaborative effort between Kenya and the EU demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing terrorism comprehensively. By working together, they aim to build regional resilience and create a safer future for all.
