Hosted in Nairobi, Kenya,on Wednesday 23rd October 2024, the event recognized individuals whose work in promoting peace, security, and development resonates deeply with the challenges and aspirations of the IGAD member states.

Highlighting IGAD’s Commitment to Peace and Security

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) continues to champion the cause of peace, security, and regional cooperation across its member states, which include Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. Through the IGAD Media Awards, the organization not only recognizes journalistic excellence but also underscores the crucial role of media in fostering unity and resilience in the face of challenges like conflicts, climate change, and regional instability.

The recognition of Richard Sultan, a South Sudanese journalist who passed away shortly before receiving his award, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by media professionals working in conflict zones. His contributions to digital journalism and peacebuilding in South Sudan are exemplary of the power of storytelling in conflict resolution.

A Strong Regional Presence

Kenya and Uganda emerged as leading countries, with multiple awardees across key categories, while Sudan and South Sudan were represented by journalists whose work addresses urgent issues of peace and conflict, particularly in light of the ongoing crises in Sudan. Sudan's media presence was especially notable, with Iklass Nimer and Salma Abdulaziz recognized for their work, even as the country faces one of its most challenging periods.
