EPRA Unveils "Kaa Safe Mtaani" Campaign to Rising Energy Accidents from Petroleum,Gas & Electric Products

Rising Energy Accidents Prompt National Call to Action as EPRA Unveils "Kaa Safe Mtaani" Campaign
Tue, 15 April 2025 | Nairobi, Kenya

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), in collaboration with key stakeholders in the energy and petroleum sector, launched a nationwide energy safety initiative dubbed "Kaa Safe Mtaani".

This comes amid a sharp rise in energy-related incidents across the country, sparking urgent calls for a culture of safety and accountability.

According to the latest Energy and Petroleum Statistics Report, energy-related accidents surged from 116 in 2023 to 153 in 2024. The consequences were grim—98 fatalities and 61 serious injuries, with petroleum tanker accidents and electrical faults identified as leading causes.

Launching the campaign, EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo emphasized the need for unified action:

Safety in energy use is not negotiable. The Kaa Safe Mtaani campaign is our rallying call to every Kenyan—from industry players to households—to take responsibility and prioritize safety in every interaction with energy products.”

Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. James Opiyo Wandayi, echoed the call for a national response:

“The future of our energy sector depends on building a sustainable safety culture. As we expand access to modern energy solutions, we must ensure that this progress is not marred by preventable accidents and tragedies.”

Nationwide Awareness and Training

The Kaa Safe Mtaani campaign will roll out across the country through public awareness drives, community activation programs, and targeted safety training sessions. These initiatives will engage both consumers and industry operators, with the aim of reducing energy-related risks at all levels.

The campaign also forms part of EPRA’s broader mission to:

  • Promote safe and efficient energy consumption

  • Encourage the adoption of clean energy alternatives such as LPG

  • Accelerate the transition to electric and autogas-powered vehicles

A Cornerstone for Safer, Greener Energy Use

As Kenya strides toward a safer and more sustainable energy future, the Kaa Safe Mtaani campaign stands as a pivotal pillar in national energy safety policy. Backed by EPRA, the government, and private sector partners, the initiative aims to empower communities with the knowledge and tools to manage energy responsibly and efficiently.

By fostering an informed and safety-conscious public, Kenya can build a more resilient, self-sufficient, and prosperous energy landscape.
