Kenya Takes Bold Leap into AI and Cloud Leadership with Huawei Cloud Summit

Nairobi, Kenya – May 16, 2025 – Riding on the success of M-PESA's continental operations hub powered by Huawei Cloud, Kenya has firmly set its sights on becoming a regional AI and cloud leader. This ambition took a significant leap forward at the Huawei Cloud Kenya Summit 2025 in Nairobi, where the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE) officially launched the Kenya AI & Cloud Pioneer Initiative. The summit, themed "Accelerate Intelligence, Ignite Smart Kenya," convened over 500 leaders and partners from Kenyan enterprises, government, and academia to chart a course for intelligent transformation across industries.

Keynote Speakers Ignite the Vision for a Smart Kenya:

  • Jacqueline Shi, President of Huawei Cloud Global Marketing and Sales Service, set the stage with an emphatic call to action: “The best time to develop Cloud and AI is NOW! For young Kenya, talent is the key. We will upgrade the current ICT training program by new technologies. For intelligent Kenya, AI is the foundation. We hope to build sustainable AI foundation in Kenya, to light-up more industries. For dynamic Kenya, Practice is the approach. In the digital journey, the most important approach is to combine technology with industrial knowledge, and realize more impossible possible. Huawei Cloud will cooperate with our customers and partners to build a young, intelligent, and dynamic Kenya together.”

  • Gao Fei, CEO of Huawei Kenya, reflected on the company's long-standing commitment: “Huawei has grown together with Kenya for 27 years, always moving in step with Kenya's development, from building communication networks to today's work in enterprise, cloud, and digital power. We are committed to helping Kenya build a smart future by leveraging AI & Cloud. Huawei looks forward to continuing our hand-in-hand work with Kenya, our customers, and partners to build a prosperous, inclusive, digital, and smart Kenya.”

  • William Dong, President of Huawei Cloud Marketing, emphasized the practical application of AI: “Huawei has collaborated with global industries to implement AI practices, including intelligent driving training, train defect detection, AI-powered code generation assistants, and digital human-based card sales systems. Data is also critical for AI development. Huawei Cloud has comprehensively upgraded its data solutions, transitioning from a data-centric to a knowledge-centric approach. This builds an AI-ready data foundation to help customers accelerate their intelligent transformation.”

Kenya's strategic advantage, amplified by the robust infrastructure supporting M-PESA's staggering 21 billion annual transactions across seven African nations on Huawei Cloud, underscores the nation's potential to spearhead digital innovation on the continent. This existing success story provides a strong foundation for Kenya's broader AI and cloud ambitions.

Mr. Washington Okoth, Secretary for ICT Infrastructure at MICDE, articulated the government's vision, stating, "Kenya is aiming to be a regional AI leader across the African continent, leveraging the power of technology to enable inclusive socio-economic development, benefiting all our citizens. We are focusing all our efforts on building AI digital infrastructure, data ecosystem and AI research and innovation. We officially released the 'Kenya Cloud Policy' to clearly prioritize the adoption of cloud-based Information and Communication Technology and is committed to achieving a seamless transition from traditional on-premises data centers to advanced cloud computing technologies."

The summit also highlighted Huawei's ongoing collaboration with the Kenyan government on critical cloud infrastructure projects, including the deployment of Kenya’s first Tier 3 cloud data center at Konza Technopolis. This state-of-the-art facility already serves over 120 industry clients and 70+ government applications on the cloud, solidifying Kenya's digital backbone. While Konza Technopolis CEO, JP Okwiri, was not quoted directly in these releases, his previous remarks have consistently emphasized the pivotal role of this data center in attracting investment and driving technological advancement in Kenya.

Collaborative Success Stories Powering Kenya's Digital Transformation:

The summit showcased compelling examples of how Huawei Cloud is empowering Kenyan organizations:

  • M-PESA: Operating its extensive African network on Huawei Cloud.
  • Konza Technopolis: Utilizing Huawei Cloud for its pioneering Tier 3 data center.
  • Royal Media Services (RMS): Streamlining content delivery with a Huawei Cloud-based OTT platform, reducing launch cycles significantly.
  • Kilimall: Enhancing its e-commerce platform to manage substantial traffic surges during peak periods.

Huawei Cloud has been operating in Kenya since 2020, rapidly becoming a leading cloud provider. Huawei Kenya reiterated its strong commitment to nurturing local talent through programs like DigiTruck, Seeds for the Future, and partnerships with over 60 Kenyan universities. A significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MICDE will further boost these efforts by training over 6,000 students annually in crucial ICT skills.

Call to Action: Shaping a Smart and Connected Future:

The launch of the Kenya AI & Cloud Pioneer Initiative serves as a powerful call to action for all stakeholders:

  • Kenya: To embrace the national Cloud Policy and actively participate in building the AI infrastructure and data ecosystem necessary for socio-economic progress.
  • Government: To continue its supportive role in fostering a conducive environment for AI and cloud adoption through policy frameworks and strategic investments.
  • Private Sector: To actively explore and implement AI and cloud solutions to drive innovation, enhance efficiency, and unlock new economic opportunities.
  • Educational Institutions: To collaborate with industry partners like Huawei to equip the next generation with the essential digital and AI skills.
  • Africa at Large: To recognize Kenya's pioneering efforts and explore opportunities for collaboration in the digital space, potentially leveraging frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to facilitate digital trade and innovation across the continent.

The Huawei Cloud Kenya Summit 2025 marks a pivotal moment in Kenya's digital transformation journey. With strong government backing, innovative technological solutions, and a collaborative spirit, Kenya is poised to emerge as a true AI and cloud pioneer, not just in the region, but potentially on the global stage.
