KRA Pledges to Facilitate Informal Sector Tax Compliance!
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has pledged to address challenges faced by the informal sector in a bid to incentivize and onboard the sector players into the tax net.
The informal sector is estimated to employ about 15 million people, accounting for 83 percent of the country's total labor force. It has a great tax potential, but is not currently contributing its fair share to the tax base.
KRA has pledged to:
- Work with the National Treasury to establish policies that will simplify, harmonise and reduce the multiplicity of taxes obligated to the informal sector.
- Educate traders to appreciate the need for paying taxes.
Tax experts and technocrats have reiterated the need to develop policies that will create a certain and predictable tax system. This will improve tax morale and subsequently inspire fairness, transparency and accountability. It will also enable simplicity and ease of tax compliance among taxpayers.
Key Issues
- The informal sector accounts for a significant portion of the Kenyan economy, but is not contributing its fair share to the tax base.
- The complexity of the tax system, the multiplicity of taxes that businesses have to pay, and the lack of awareness of tax obligations are some of the challenges that the informal sector faces when it comes to tax compliance.
- Developing a certain and predictable tax system is important for improving tax morale and encouraging businesses to comply with their tax obligations.
Call to Action
KRA is committed to working with the informal sector to improve tax compliance. We encourage all informal businesses to take advantage of KRA's initiatives and learn more about their tax obligations. By paying our taxes fairly and on time, we can all contribute to building a more prosperous Kenya.
Additional Information
The informal sector is a vital part of the Kenyan economy, and its inclusion in the tax base would be a significant boost to government revenue. The revenue generated from the informal sector can be used to fund important public services such as education, healthcare and infrastructure development.
KRA is committed to creating a tax system that is fair and equitable for all businesses. We are working with the informal sector to understand their challenges and develop solutions that will make it easier for them to comply with their tax obligations.
We encourage all informal businesses to reach out to KRA and learn more about their tax obligations. We are here to help you comply with the law and pay your fair share of taxes.
