Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Led Government Regrets the AU -UAE statement on Sudan
- Sudan on Wednesday sharply criticized the African Union Commission for adopting a joint statement with a country Sudanese government accuses of deeply immersed in the atrocities afflicted on civilians all over the country and Darfur in Particular, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has expressed “regret“ regarding a joint statement issued by the African Union Commission and the UAE on Tuesday, which , the ministry charged, addressed the Sudanese situation in a biased way.
UAE Minister of State Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan held talks in Addis Ababa on Tuesday with Ethiopian government officials and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mohamed Ali Youssouf.
During these talks, discussions focused on developments in the Sudanese situation, with both sides strongly condemning the atrocities and attacks targeting civilians and humanitarian workers.
According to a joint AU-UAE statement, the participants stressed the need to ensure unhindered access for humanitarian aid to those affected and to hold accountable those responsible for violations of international humanitarian law, emphasizing that the responsibility for ending the war rests directly with the warring parties.
However, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated on Wednesday that the statements issued in Addis Ababa yesterday reiterated the same narrative equating the Sudanese government with a terrorist militia condemned by the international community, including the African Union itself , on numerous occasions, most recently for the militias massacres in El Fasher
The Ministry reminded, in a statement carried by the official media, the African Union Commission that the AU joint statement was issued with a state that supports the militia and is complicit in the bloodshed and violations against the Sudanese civilians.
Furthermore, the AU-UAE statement was issued without any appropriate forum or even a gathering of other African Union members, and with a state that is not a member, raising serious questions about the Commission's anticipated role in resolving conflicts in Africa, in accordance with the slogan "African solutions for African conflicts."
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condemnation of the statement's repeated calls for an unconditional humanitarian truce, despite the Sudanese government's declared position on a ceasefire.” the ministrry stressed, adding that this was confirmed by the Sudanese peace initiative announced by the Prime Minister on December 22, 2015, at the UN Security Council, and welcomed by the UN Secretary-General and endorsed by regional and international organizations, including the African Union. This raises questions about the African Union Commission's true stance on the Sudanese peace initiative.
The statement reiterated the Sudanese government's firm commitment to achieving peace in Sudan in accordance with the aspirations and legitimate demands of the Sudanese people, and its readiness to engage with any initiative that affirms this.
The statement also indicated that the Sudanese government will not engage with any initiative that equates it with the terrorist militia of the”Dagalo clan”, a derogatory name for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)
