Effects of Apple cider vinegar (ACV) sprayed on Minnesota's Ilhan Omar

How Risky is Apple cider vinegar (ACV

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is highly acidic, making excessive or undiluted consumption risky. Common side effects include enamel erosion, throat burns, gastrointestinal distress (nausea/reflux), low potassium levels, and potential interactions with medications like diuretics and insulin. To minimize risks, always dilute ACV in water and limit intake to 1-2 tablespoons per day.

Key Health Risks

Tooth Enamel Erosion: The high acetic acid content can wear down, soften, and destroy tooth enamel over time.

Esophageal and Throat Burns: Drinking undiluted ACV or consuming ACV tablets can burn the esophagus and cause severe irritation.

Digestive Distress: It can cause nausea, worsen heartburn, and cause feelings of fullness, which may be detrimental for individuals with conditions like gastroparesis.

Low Potassium (Hypokalemia): High, chronic intake may lead to dangerously low potassium levels, which can cause muscle weakness and cramping.

Medication Interactions: ACV can interact with diuretics, laxatives, and medications for diabetes or heart disease, altering their effectiveness.

Bone Loss: Long-term, high consumption might contribute to reduced bone density.

Safety Tips

Always Dilute: Mix 1–2 tablespoons of ACV with a large glass of water.

Use a Straw: Drink diluted ACV through a straw to minimize contact with teeth.

Rinse Mouth: Rinse your mouth with water after consumption.

Limit Intake: Do not exceed 1–2 tablespoons per day.

Avoid on Empty Stomach: Taking it on an empty stomach can increase nausea and digestive issues.

Anyone with pre-existing kidney disease, low potassium, or diabetes should consult a doctor before adding it to their diet.
