AFRICA’S TIME IS NOW: UN Chief Declares Nairobi a Global Power Hub, Demands Seat at the Table for Africa during Groundbreaking and Office Inauguration Ceremony of over $340 Million Expansion at UN Officess in Nairobi-Kenya (UNON)
AFRICA’S TIME IS NOW: UN Chief Declares Nairobi a Global Power Hub, Demands Seat at the Table for Africa
NAIROBI, KENYA Monday, 11 May 2026; Time: 11:00am – In a historic address from the heart of the continent, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has signaled a seismic shift in global diplomacy. Standing alongside President William Ruto at the UN Office in Nairobi (UNON), Guterres inaugurated a massive $340 million expansion of the Gigiri campus, effectively cementing Nairobi’s status as a "green center of gravity" and the third-largest UN hub in the world—trailing only New York and Geneva.
The Secretary-General’s visit was not merely about bricks and mortar; it was a scathing indictment of an "unfair international system" and a rallying cry for the total reimagining of African representation on the world stage.
BACKGROUND
The Nairobi expansion — approved by the General Assembly — reflects a broader shift: bringing multilateral decision-making closer to the regions most affected by global challenges. It includes new modern, permanent, and climate-resilient office blocks (US$ 66.2 million) and new upgraded conferencing facilities (US$ 265.7 million) that will increase the number of meeting rooms from 14 to 30, and seating capacity from 2,000 to 9,000 delegates, positioning UNON as the
third largest UN global hub after New York and Geneva, the fourth being Vienna. In addition, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has invested (US$ 11.2 million) in new office blocks at UNON.
"A Matter of Justice": The Nairobi Expansion
The Secretary-General was clear: the expansion of UNON is a corrective measure for a 1945 world order that ignored the Global South.
"To expand this headquarters of the UN is a matter of justice. This is the only headquarters in the South... All this was devised in 1945, and in 1945, Africa was not yet represented. Now we are correcting this situation."
Remarks by: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres
The investment includes:
-
$265.7 million for state-of-the-art conferencing facilities.
-
An increase in seating capacity from 2,000 to 9,000 delegates.
-
The relocation of staff from New York and Geneva to Nairobi, citing the city's efficiency and strategic importance.
The Global Power Shift: Let’s Tell It Like It Is
Guterres did not mince words regarding the structural exclusion of African nations from global governance. He called for an immediate end to the "historic injustice" that denies Africa a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and a fair share of influence in the IMF and World Bank.
"Africa must have the voice, representation and resources its people deserve," Guterres declared. "Reform cannot wait."
He highlighted the "egregious borrowing costs" faced by African nations—often paying three times more than developed countries—and the devastating ripple effects of global conflicts, such as the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, which has sent fertilizer prices soaring by 35% in a single month, threatening continental food security.
A CALL TO ACTION TO ALL AFRICANS
The Secretary-General has laid down the gauntlet, but the future belongs to those who seize it. To every African—from the youth in the tech hubs of Nairobi to the farmers ensuring our food security:
-
DEMAND REPRESENTATION: Our leaders must continue to press for permanent African seats on the Security Council. We are no longer spectators in global history; we are the protagonists.
-
CHAMPION LOCAL INNOVATION: As the UN shifts its "gravity" to Nairobi, we must ensure our local businesses and professionals are the primary beneficiaries of this $340 million investment.
-
REJECT EXTERNAL SPOILERS: We must stand united against outside interests that provide weapons and fuel conflict in Sudan, the DRC, and the Sahel. African-led solutions are the only path to lasting peace.
-
OWN THE NARRATIVE: Do not wait for the world to acknowledge your value. Like the UNON expansion proves, Africa is the center of the future. Build, grow, and transform your community with the confidence of a continent that is finally taking its rightful place.
The legacy of extraction is over. The era of African leadership has begun.
Background about the Ceremony
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, addressed a press conference at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) following a groundbreaking and office inauguration ceremony with the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Samoei Ruto, for a major expansion of the UN's Nairobi headquarters.
The events come as the United Nations advances an over USD 340 million investment in Nairobi, reinforcing the city's position as the only UN Secretariat headquarters in the Global South and a growing hub for global decision-making.
The Secretary-General addressed:
Global power shift toward Africa, including calls for permanent African representation on the Security Council
The current humanitarian situation in Sudan, South Sudan, the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Sahel, among other places.
The impact of the current situation in the Middle East and how it is specifically impacting many African countries.
Reform of global finance, including high borrowing costs facing African economies
