Media Accreditation Now Open UN Biodiversity subsidiary body meetings to convene in Nairobi: 27 July – 12 August The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) invites media representatives to apply for accreditation to two pivotal global meetings taking place in Nairobi this July and August: SBSTTA-28: Twenty-eighth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice, 27 July – 1 August 2026. SBI-7: Seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation, 4 – 12 August 2026. Why it matters: These meetings will help shape the global biodiversity agenda ahead of the 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 17) in Yerevan, Armenia, where governments are expected to assess progress and identify areas where action must accelerate to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), the world’s agreement for halting and reversing biodiversity loss which includes four goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030. SBSTTA-28 will provide scientific and technical advice on key biodiversity issues and emerging findings relevant to implementation of the Framework. The meeting will also contribute inputs to the ongoing Global Review process under the KMGBF, helping inform discussions on where progress is being made and where additional action is needed ahead of COP 17. Discussions will include: • Emerging findings from the Global Review of progress toward the KMGBF • How progress toward targets will be monitored and measured • Marine and coastal biodiversity conservation • Issues related to synthetic biology • Sustainable wildlife management and protected areas SBI-7 will focus on strengthening implementation of the Convention and the Framework, including review of progress, implementation challenges, resource mobilization, capacitybuilding, monitoring and reporting, and approaches to accelerating national action. Key items will cover: • Biodiversity finance and resource mobilization • Digital sequence information and benefit-sharing • Capacity-building and support for national implementation • Whole-of-society approaches to implementation and mainstreaming biodiversity across sectors and decision-making • Reviews of implementation under the Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols Discussions are expected to help clarify how Parties can translate global biodiversity commitments into more effective implementation across sectors and society ahead of COP 17.
