Moscow - Kenya and Russia have taken a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral economic relations following discussions on the establishment of an Intergovernmental Kenya–Russia Commission on Economic Cooperation.

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, held discussions with Russia’s Minister of Economic Development, Hon. Maxim Reshetnikov, on the proposed agreement establishing the Commission.

The proposed framework seeks to provide an institutional mechanism for promoting economic cooperation between the Republic of Kenya and the Russian Federation, opening new avenues for trade, investment and mutually beneficial partnerships.

Under the proposed agreement, the Commission will be co-chaired by representatives of the two governments.

The Russian side will be led by a Federal Minister or Deputy Federal Minister, while Kenya will be represented by a Cabinet Secretary or the Prime Cabinet Secretary.

The composition of the respective national delegations will be determined by the Co-Chairs.

PCS said the establishment of the Commission is expected to provide a structured platform for regular dialogue, coordination and the identification of practical areas of economic collaboration.

"The initiative builds on the longstanding cordial relations between Kenya and Russia and reflects the shared commitment of the two countries to translate diplomatic ties into tangible economic benefits," said Mudavadi.

He added; "For Kenya, the proposed Commission presents an opportunity to expand market access, attract investment, strengthen commercial partnerships and explore new areas of cooperation that support the country's economic transformation agenda."

Dr. Mudavadi said the agreement recognises the potential for expanded economic engagement between the two countries, while providing for cooperation in accordance with their respective national laws and regulations.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Third Russia–Africa Summit in Moscow, where Kenya is pursuing stronger economic partnerships and opportunities to advance its national development priorities.

"The proposed Commission will therefore serve as an important vehicle for deepening Kenya–Russia economic relations and ensuring that bilateral engagement delivers practical outcomes for businesses, investors and citizens of both countries," said Dr. Mudavadi.
