✨ Exploring Russian Language & Culture in Nairobi! 

The Russian Language & Culture Day, held from November 15th–17th, 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, was a vibrant celebration of Russian heritage, language, and education! Hosted by My History Fund, the Russian Embassy in Nairobi, and the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, the event featured exciting highlights that captivated attendees:

Key Outcomes of the Event:

Russian Language Competition:
Kenyans impressed everyone with their fluency, winning awards for speaking and reciting Russian poems & National Anthem.

Masterclass by Dr. Vadim:

Dr. Vadim, Director of International Affairs and Foreign Language Professor at Tomsk State Pedagogical University, delivered a compelling session on Russian education systems and culture. Did you know pedagogical universities in Russia specialize in education-related courses?

Dr. Vadim broke down the differences and similarities in Russian & Kenyan studies:

• High School vs. University: The Unified State Exams (ЕГЭ) determine university admissions, unlike Kenya’s KCSE.
• Scholarships: Scoring high in these exams can earn students full scholarships—covering tuition and more—compared to Kenya’s HELB loans.

Education Perks in Russia:

• Free Educaton & Free meals for primary school children up to Grade 4.
• Public Primary,Middle & Highschool are free, but with minimal meal costs  only after Grade 4 which is aproximately (kes.150 daily).
• Foreigners with one Russian parent or from former Soviet countries also qualify for scholarships.

Opportunities for Kenyans:

Kenya currently receives 60 scholarships annually through the Education-In-Russia Government platform(https://education-in-russia.com/). A chance to study in a country where education is well-supported and cultural exchange is rich!

Flowers in Russia: Odd numbers of flowers are for celebrations, while even numbers are reserved for condolences. A unique tradition to remember!

Cultural Similarities & Surprises!
Just as Kenyan kids curiously call out "Mzungu" when they see foreigners, Russian children might shyly stare at Black visitors, intrigued but reserved.

• Thank you = "Спасибо" (Spasiba)

NB: Russian uses a 33-letter Cyrillic alphabet—making it one of the most challenging languages to master compared to English's 26 letters.
