PEP = Post-Exposure Prophylaxis medicines that can help prevent HIV only for emergency situations, just like the commonly used "P2"???? Pregnancy???? Emergency Pills, and must be started within 72 hours of a possible exposure. PEP is a 28-day course of medication.
PrEP = Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
Is used:
For people who are at risk of getting HIV but don't already have it.
PrEP can be taken as a pill every day or an injection every two months.
PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV and stop it from taking hold if someone is exposed.
E.g., if one partner is HIV Positive whilst the other is Negative but still wants to live happily together.
Here are some other things to know about PrEP and PEP:
PEP is not intended to replace other HIV prevention methods, such as condoms or PrEP.
People who are already taking PrEP typically don't need PEP if they are exposed to HIV while taking PrEP.
Common side effects of PrEP include:
1. Increased bowel movements
2. Upset stomach
3. Headaches
4. Dry mouth
These side effects usually go away within two to four weeks.
If you feel like you might be exposed to HIV frequently, you should talk to your health care professional about PrEP.
