Russia's UrbanTransportData Project is Now Open to All African Megacities
Revolutionizing Urban Transit: African Megacities Join Global Data Project!
The global transport landscape is changing, and 10 African capitals are now at the forefront of this transformation!
On August 22, 2025, as part of the IV International Transport Summit in Moscow,Russia the international UrbanTransportData portal for analyzing urban transport infrastructure was launched.
As of today,2nd Sept 2025, 32 cities worldwide are already participating in the project. The platform brings together about 600 indicators, which have been processed and standardized according to unified criteria. This project is unique in its ability to compare transport systems of various countries while taking into account their specific geographical and economic characteristics. UrbanTransportData allows for a deeper understanding of global trends in transport development, the study of innovation practices in cities, and the analysis of current conditions using 50 key indicators.
The UrbanTransportData project, a powerful new platform for analyzing urban transport infrastructure, has recently expanded in its biggest wave yet. This initiative, which already includes 32 cities worldwide, is now welcoming major African megacities like Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Lusaka into its global network.
A major milestone was achieved the day before, with the largest expansion in the project’s history: 17 new cities joined, more than doubling the total number of participants. This expansion can confidently be called African, as – in addition to traditional partners from the Commonwealth of Independent States, Asia, and Latin America – the initiative welcomed 10 African capitals:
- Addis Ababa (Ethiopia),
- Banjul (the Gambia),
- Windhoek (Namibia),
- Kampala (Uganda),
- Lilongwe (Malawi),
- Lusaka (Zambia),
- Nairobi (Kenya),
- Maputo (Mozambique),
- Freetown (Sierra Leone),
- and Harare (Zimbabwe).
By joining this unique project, these cities can access a platform with over 600 standardized indicators, allowing them to compare their transport systems with others globally while also taking into account their unique geographic and economic features. The goal? To gain a deeper understanding of global trends and discover innovative practices to solve their own transit challenges.
This is more than just data—it's an opportunity! The project provides a proven methodology developed by the Moscow Transport Complex to help cities collect and systematize their own data. This will allow African capitals to conduct joint research, share insights, and identify shared challenges and solutions. The UrbanTransportData team is ready to provide full support every step of the way.
Is your city ready to modernize its transport system and join this global initiative?
