Sarah Keenan: Shaping Kenya’s Next Generation of Geologists Through Global Academic Partnership at Taita Taveta University (TTU) School of Mines

Voi, Kenya | Rapid City, USA
At a time when Africa’s mining sector is under growing pressure to balance resource extraction with environmental stewardship, academic capacity building has emerged as one of the continent’s most strategic investments. In this context, the appointment of Dr. Sarah Keenan, Associate Professor of Geology at South Dakota Mines (USA), as a Fulbright Specialist marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s geology and mining education ecosystem.
Dr. Keenan becomes the first Fulbright Specialist from South Dakota Mines, joining a select group of approximately 400 U.S. professionals annually deployed worldwide to address shared global challenges through education, research, and institutional development.
Building Kenya’s Second Undergraduate Geology Program
Beginning January 2026, Dr. Keenan will spend four weeks in Voi, Kenya, working closely with Taita Taveta University (#TTU) to establish the institution’s first undergraduate geology program, with a strong emphasis on environmental sciences.
Once launched—targeted for Fall 2026—the program will become only the second undergraduate geology degree in Kenya, a country whose economy and future industrialization are deeply linked to minerals, land use, water resources, agriculture, and environmental management.
For Kenya’s mining sector, this development is particularly significant. A well-trained geological workforce is foundational not only for responsible mineral exploration and extraction, but also for land rehabilitation, environmental impact assessment, and climate-resilient development.
> “Whether you’re trying to grow something or trying to mine something, you need to know what’s under your feet,” Dr. Keenan emphasizes—underscoring geology’s cross-cutting relevance across mining, agriculture, infrastructure, and environmental planning.
Why Taita Taveta Matters:
Taita Taveta County sits within a geologically diverse region of Kenya, neighboring mineral-rich zones and critical ecological systems, including savannah landscapes that host both biodiversity and extractive activities. Establishing a geology program in Voi positions TTU as a future regional center for earth sciences, with the potential to support:
1.Sustainable mining practices
2. Environmental impact and rehabilitation expertise
3. Community-informed resource governance
4.Skilled local participation in the mining value chain
For Kenya, this aligns directly with national priorities on local content, skills transfer, and value-based resource management.
Fulbright as a Bridge Between Mining, Education, and Sustainability
The Fulbright Specialist Program (The Fulbright Program), established in 2001, is designed to foster short-term, high-impact academic collaborations. In Dr. Keenan’s case, the engagement goes beyond curriculum design—it lays the groundwork for long-term institutional partnerships between Kenyan and U.S. universities.
Dr.Keenan brings with her extensive international academic experience, having completed part of her undergraduate studies abroad and worked across multicultural environments. Since joining South Dakota Mines in 2018, she has focused on geology education and research with strong applied relevance.
Her Kenya engagement is expected to open pathways for:
1. Joint geological and environmental research
2. Student and faculty exchanges
3. Comparative studies linking fossil records with modern savannah ecosystems
4. Knowledge transfer in responsible mining and environmental geology
“I would love to do research in the future in Kenya, combining some of our fossil resources with modern ecosystems and processes,” she notes.
Implications for Africa’s Mining Future
For Africa’s mining sector—often criticized for skills gaps, environmental degradation, and weak local beneficiation—initiatives like this represent a quiet but powerful shift. Training geologists locally ensures that mining decisions are informed by context-specific knowledge, environmental sensitivity, and community realities.
As Kenya continues to position itself as a regional hub for mining services, policy reform, and sustainable development, academic collaborations such as this Fulbright engagement will play a critical role in shaping the next generation of African geologists, mining professionals, and environmental scientists.
A Model Worth Replicating
Dr. Sarah Keenan’s work in Voi is more than a personal achievement—it is a model of how international academic diplomacy can directly support Africa’s mineral sector transformation.
For stakeholders across mining, academia, and policy, the message is clear: sustainable mining begins in the classroom, long before the first drill touches the ground.
