UBA Kenya Returns to Profitability, Strengthens Capital Position and Signals Growth Trajectory

NAIROBI, March 29, 2026 — United Bank for Africa (UBA) Kenya has officially announced a robust recovery in its 2025 financial performance, signaling a successful milestone in the bank's transformation journey. The institution posted a profit before tax of KES 426.8 million, a remarkable 173% improvement over the previous year's loss.

Capital Injection and Market Confidence

In a move that underscores the UBA Group's commitment to the Kenyan market, UBA Kenya received a strategic capital injection from its parent company, UBA Plc, in Q1 2026. This investment has enabled the bank to fully comply with the Central Bank of Kenya’s (CBK) minimum core capital requirement of KES 3 billion, establishing it as a resilient and well-capitalized financial institution.

Key Financial Highlights (FY 2025)

The bank’s improved performance is underpinned by significant growth across its primary business lines:

  • Customer Deposits: Increased by 76% to KES 16.1 billion, reflecting surging customer confidence.

  • Loans and Advances: Grew by 131%, demonstrating the bank’s expanded support for local businesses and key economic sectors.

Driving Impact in Kenya’s Economy

Beyond the balance sheet, UBA Kenya is cementing its role as a strategic partner in national development. The bank recently played a pivotal role in the USD 150 million Road Securitization Programme. This initiative was designed to unlock liquidity for road contractors and accelerate the completion of stalled infrastructure projects, ultimately boosting trade and mobility across the country.

“UBA Kenya’s return to profitability marks a significant milestone," stated George O. Otieno, Chairman of the Board of Directors. "The additional capital injection from UBA Plc positions us on a solid foundation to play a greater role in supporting Kenya’s economic growth and deepening our contribution across key sectors.”

Ms. Mary Mulili, Managing Director/CEO of UBA Kenya, echoed these sentiments, noting that the bank is now firmly focused on expansion. "Our return to profitability is a clear signal that UBA Kenya is on the right path. We have strengthened our foundation and are now focused on growth."

Strategic Pillars for the Future

UBA Kenya’s growth strategy for 2026 and beyond is anchored on five key pillars:

  1. Cross-Border Trade: Utilizing the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) to facilitate seamless intra-African trade.

  2. Sector-Focused Lending: Targeted support for Manufacturing, Agriculture, Mining, and Construction.

  3. SME & Ecosystem Financing: Providing tailored solutions for small businesses and their value chains.

  4. Digital Innovation: Expanding digital banking platforms and payment solutions.

  5. Sustainable & Green Financing: Advancing investments in clean energy and environmentally responsible projects.

Future Outlook

With a reinforced capital base and the backing of the global UBA Group—which operates in 20 African countries and four international markets (UK, US, France, and UAE)—UBA Kenya is poised to scale its lending operations, drive financial inclusion, and act as a primary facilitator for trade across the continent.

About UBA Kenya A subsidiary of United Bank for Africa Plc, UBA Kenya is a full-service financial institution licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya. The bank specializes in innovative financial solutions for corporates, SMEs, and individuals, with a specific focus on trade finance and digital banking.
