MINING Tragedy in West Pokot: WHO IS TO BLAME? Renewed Calls for Safety Reforms in Kenya’s Artisanal & Small-Scale Mining Sector

Tragedy in West Pokot: Renewed Calls for Safety Reforms in Kenya’s Artisanal & Small-Scale Mining Sector

By K254 Media Africa| K254 Global Mining Report Magazine

A tragic mining incident in West Pokot County has once again exposed the dangerous realities facing Kenya’s artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM), renewing urgent calls for stronger safety regulations, formalization, emergency response systems, and government intervention across the country’s mining sector.

According to the Chairman of the Artisanal & Small Scale Miners Association of Kenya (ASMAK), Dan Odida, the deadly incident occurred in a remote mining area near Kapenguria, where miners were reportedly trapped following a massive rock collapse.

Mr. Odida, who visited the scene together with local authorities, community leaders, and mining stakeholders, described the situation as deeply devastating and emotionally disturbing.

“So far 15 bodies were retrieved, out of which 13 were ladies and 2 men. While I was at the scene, I witnessed 3 big boulders that could not be overturned by humans to remove underlying bodies. There were smells of bodies still trapped under the boulders but they cannot be removed. So it is feared more bodies are still trapped and may not be retrieved any sooner,” said Mr. Dan Odida.

The ASMAK Chairperson further revealed that he had earlier attended a strategic meeting in Kapenguria on Tuesday, 12th May 2026, together with the County Mining Officer and the Chairperson of the County Miners Association of West Pokot, before proceeding to the mountainous accident scene alongside the area Chief and rescue teams.

Call for Self-Regulatory Safety Structures

Following the incident, Mr. Odida also urged artisanal miners across Kenya to embrace proactive safety measures through community-led accountability mechanisms within mining sites.

According to the ASMAK Chairperson, miners should consider establishing self-regulatory Health and Safety Committees capable of conducting regular safety inspections and identifying dangerous operational risks before disasters occur.

The proposal is expected to strengthen grassroots-level monitoring systems within artisanal mining zones, particularly in remote regions where government inspection capacity remains limited.

Stakeholders believe such miner-led safety structures could help improve hazard awareness, encourage compliance with operational safety standards, and reduce fatalities linked to collapsing shafts, unstable rock formations, and unsafe excavation practices.

A Sector Dominated by Informality and Risk

The incident has once again highlighted the fragile operational environment under which thousands of artisanal and small-scale miners across Kenya continue to operate. In many ASM zones, miners often work without:

  • Adequate geological surveys
  • Modern excavation equipment
  • Protective gear
  • Emergency rescue systems
  • Formal insurance coverage
  • Structured mining cooperatives
  • Real-time monitoring of unstable rock formations

In highly vulnerable terrains such as hilly and rocky regions of West Pokot, risks associated with landslides, collapsing shafts, loose boulders, flooding, and poor ventilation remain extremely high.

Mining stakeholders are now warning that unless Kenya accelerates the formalization and modernization of artisanal mining operations, similar tragedies may continue to occur in different mineral-rich counties.

Women Increasingly Active in ASM Sector

One of the most heartbreaking revelations from the West Pokot tragedy is the high number of women believed to have lost their lives.

Out of the 15 retrieved bodies, 13 were reportedly women — a reflection of the growing participation of women in artisanal mining activities due to economic hardship, unemployment, and limited alternative livelihoods in remote areas.

Across Africa, women continue playing critical roles in mineral extraction, transportation, sorting, processing, and trade within ASM value chains. However, many remain exposed to unsafe working conditions, exploitation, poor wages, and lack of social protection mechanisms.

The West Pokot incident is therefore expected to intensify discussions around gender-sensitive mining reforms, occupational safety standards, and social protection programs targeting vulnerable mining communities.

Need for Emergency Mining Response Units

Industry stakeholders are now calling upon the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, county governments, and disaster response agencies to establish specialized emergency mining rescue units in high-risk mining zones.

Experts argue that delayed access to modern rescue machinery significantly reduces chances of survival during mining collapses, especially in remote mountainous areas where manual rescue efforts become almost impossible.

The presence of massive boulders at the West Pokot scene reportedly complicated recovery operations, with local rescuers unable to move several heavy rocks suspected to be trapping additional victims underneath.

Time for Policy Action and Formalization

The tragedy also raises broader questions regarding the pace of ASM formalization in Kenya under the Mining Act and the implementation of safer mining frameworks aligned with international best practices.

Stakeholders within the sector continue advocating for:

  • Licensing and registration of artisanal miners
  • Geological mapping of ASM zones
  • Safety and technical training programs
  • Affordable mining equipment financing
  • Formation of regulated mining cooperatives
  • Environmental and occupational safety compliance
  • Access to healthcare and insurance for miners
  • Structured market access for locally mined minerals

Analysts believe that strengthening Kenya’s artisanal mining ecosystem could not only save lives but also unlock significant economic opportunities under regional frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

A National Wake-Up Call

As families continue mourning loved ones in West Pokot, the incident now stands as one of the deadliest reminders of the human cost associated with unsafe artisanal mining operations.

The disaster is likely to trigger renewed debate among policymakers, mining associations, civil society actors, and development partners on the future of artisanal mining governance in Kenya.

For many observers, the tragedy should serve not merely as a moment of grief, but as a national wake-up call demanding urgent reforms, stronger enforcement mechanisms, and sustainable investment into safer mining systems that protect lives while supporting livelihoods.
