Planet Gold Kenya: A Shining Example of How to Reduce Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining


Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is a major source of mercury pollution around the world, but a new project in Kenya is showing how to reduce mercury use in a way that benefits everyone involved.

The Planet Gold Kenya project is a five-year initiative that aims to reduce mercury use in the ASGM sector by 1.5 tonnes. The project is working with six mining communities in Narok, Migori, Kakamega, and Vihiga counties to provide training, technical assistance, and financial support for the adoption of mercury-free processing technologies such as:

KRA Pledges to Facilitate Informal Sector Tax Compliance!


The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has pledged to address challenges faced by the informal sector in a bid to incentivize and onboard the sector players into the tax net.

The informal sector is estimated to employ about 15 million people, accounting for 83 percent of the country's total labor force. It has a great tax potential, but is not currently contributing its fair share to the tax base.

KRA has pledged to:

  • Work with the National Treasury to establish policies that will simplify, harmonise and reduce the multiplicity of taxes obligated to the informal sector.
  • Educate traders to appreciate the need for paying taxes.
